Why Is My Bird Sitting on the Bottom of the Cage?

Budgies, cockatiels, and parrots may briefly explore the cage floor, forage, or pick up dropped food. A bird that normally stays on perches but begins sitting quietly on the bottom of the cage for long periods may be seriously unwell.

Why would a sick bird stay on the floor? Severe weakness, balance problems, foot or leg injury, respiratory disease, neurologic problems, systemic infection, or advanced nutritional disease can make perching difficult. Female birds may also sit on the cage floor when experiencing reproductive problems such as egg binding.

What other signs are important? Puffed feathers, closed eyes, poor appetite, breathing with strong tail movement, vomiting, abnormal droppings, bleeding, or inability to grip a perch increase concern.

What should you do before transport? Reduce unnecessary handling. If the bird is weak and falling, a safer low setup may reduce injury while transportation is arranged. Keep the bird calm and contact an avian veterinarian or emergency facility.

Veterinary evaluation Because a bird on the cage floor may be unstable, the veterinarian often prioritizes stabilization before extensive testing. Once safe, the bird may need bloodwork, X-rays, fecal testing, or other diagnostics depending on the suspected cause.

Treatment Treatment can range from fluids and nutritional support to oxygen, treatment of infection, management of reproductive disease, or orthopedic care. The symptom itself does not reveal the diagnosis.

Petvimo can help owners note when the behavior started and what other changes occurred, but a weak or unresponsive bird on the cage floor should be treated as an emergency.

Frequently asked questions

My bird goes to the floor to forage. Is that bad?

No. Active, normal foraging is different from sitting weakly or sleeping on the floor.

What if the bird is lying down?

A weak, unresponsive, or recumbent bird needs immediate veterinary care.
